Sodium Chloride
It's table salt!
Sodium chloride forms cubic crystals
Sodium chloride, also know as table salt, is a ionic compound, comprised of cubic crystals of positive sodium ions and negative chloride ions in a one-to-one ratio, giving the chemical formula NaCl.
While salt has important uses as a preservative, it also acts as a flavor-enhancing compound. Sodium ions activate receptor proteins in taste buds, enhancing flavor sensations. this is why many desserts call for a small amount of salt to be added. While this affects flavors such as sweetness and sourness, there is also a salty taste associated with sodium channels called EnaC.
