Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
Niacin, an essential component of NAD+!
The structure of niacin
Vitamin B3 is niacin. Niacin is an essential component of the coenzyme NAD+, which is involved in reduction-oxidation reactions in metabolism.
In addition to getting niacin directly from dietary sources such as whole grains or tomatoes, the body can produce niacin from the amino acid tryptophan. A deficiency of niacin leads to a condition called pellagra, with symptoms grouped into the four D’s: dermatitis, dementia, diarrhea, and death.
