Slicing an Onion

Technique

Don't cry, it's not that hard!

When slicing an onion, the first consideration is whether to slice perpendicular or parallel to the root. Slicing parallel to the root will result in crescent shaped slices, while slicing perpendicular to the root will result in half-circles. There is not much that can be done to avoid the irritation that comes when cutting onions, other than wearing sealed eye protection, such as swimming goggles.
